Jaipur Literature Festival
Jaipur Literature Festival, Rajasthan | January 19 – January 23
Billed as ‘the greatest literary show on Earth, the Jaipur Literature Festival is a delightful platform for the exchange of ideas.
The fundamental principles behind the Jaipur Literature Festival haven’t changed in the past 15 years, neither will it undergo any changes in the future. It acts as a venue that is open to everyone. The Jaipure Literature Festival brings together some of the world’s best writers, intellectuals, humanitarians, politicians, business leaders, sportspersons and even entertainers onto a stage where they engage in respectful debate and hold meaningful discussions with each other as well as the public.
Noted historian William Dalrymple and Jaipur Literature Festival Director Namita Gokhale invite speakers to take part in the five-day event being held in Jaipur, the vibrant state capital of Rajasthan. The list of speakers who have graced the Jaipur Literature Festival so far reads like the who’s who of the literary world, including Man Booker Prize winners like Ben Okri, Margaret Atwood and Paul Beatty.
Nobel Prize winners such as JM Coetzee, Orhan Pamuk, Amartya Sen and Muhammad Yunus have also been a part of the Jaipur Literature Festival. Sahitya Akademi winners Gulzar, Girish Karnad, Javed Akhtar, MT Vasudevan Nair, UR Ananthamurthy and the late Mahasweta Devi figure on this impressive list; as do literary stalwarts like Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Vikram Seth, Amish Tripathi and Ngozi Adichie.
The Jaipur Literature Festival transcends the written word, and so has played host to the likes of the Dalai Lama, former Indian President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Oprah Winfrey, Amitabh Bachchan and Stephen Fry.
The Jaipur Literature Festival has assumed an international flavor, traveling from its usual venue of Jaipur in Rajasthan, India to overseas destinations in the United States of America, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Qatar. With disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Jaipur Literature Festival went digital, attracting well over 27 million viewers in January 2021.
The last edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival saw it return back to its roots, but this time with a sizeable online following. In 2023, the Jaipur Literature Festival is scheduled to be held at the Hotel Clarks Amer in Jaipur, Rajasthan between January 19 and January 23. Entry is free, but pre-registration is mandatory.
