WORD FROM GROUP CEO

Achma Asokan
Group CEO, AirlinePros

Dear Friends,

As we are almost at the end of 2024, and the festive season is usually a time for retrospection. Looking back on 2024 has me completely overwhelmed with wonder on a year so filled with fun and games – I am calling it games, but it was a pivotal, action-packed year for both the aviation industry and AirlinePros! It was characterized by a strong rebound in global traffic after the pandemic years, shifting consumer behaviours, and there seemed to be this palpable kind of urgency from the global realization of the need to balance growth with sustainability and cultural preservation.

We are delighted to have an industry guru, Aaron Munetsi, CEO of the Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA) share his insights about the future of the aviation sector in Africa, the rising continent. Secondly, we have a young and dynamic lady, Charmaine Matheus, the Acting CEO of the Namibia Tourism Board, join us to showcase “Destination Namibia”. AirlinePros in conjunction with NTB will be offering a trip to Namibia as a raffle prize.

IATA had predicted a 10% year-on-year growth in revenue for airlines, approaching the $1 trillion threshold, with a net profit margin of 3.1% and an operating margin of 6.0%. Passenger demand showed quite amazing growth where some months saw the Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPKs) outpace the Available Seat Kilometers (ASKs).

For AirlinePros, growth pretty much follows that of the trend of the airline industry and the 2023 trend and results gave us the impetus to restructure to be more poised to handle the global expansion and provide unparalleled services to our Airline Clients. A subsidiary, AirlinePros International Inc., was created and helmed by Shreyas Nanavati, to focus on global operational excellence, and the AirlinePros Service Center, helmed by Vinu Baby provides support services to all our global offices to enable them to focus on the client requirements. Anil Mathew Asokan, the Deputy CEO of the holding company; with Xavier Masule, Group CFO; Corina Enciu, Group CXO; Judith Kolakowski, Group CAO; and Anita Marie Lukhele, Group International Relations Officer were promoted internally to steer the organization into the future.

Thomas Windmuller, ex-IATA and Willy Boulter, ex-IndiGo and TAAG etc. graciously joined the Board as non-executive directors. The global leadership team have been undergoing training to manage both emotional and culture differences to cope with our global expansion which is now in excess of 60 countries.

We had an inkling that 2024 could be some kind of a milestone in aviation history. The record spike in flying has been aided by many supporting factors signalling the return to profitability for the industry. According to UNWTO, International tourist arrivals reached 96% of pre-pandemic levels by July 2024, indicating a strong rebound in global travel demand and WTTC stated that the USA as the world’s most powerful travel and tourism market, contributed $2.36 trillion to its economy.

2024 saw a notable rise in automated and mobile bookings, with consumers expecting personalized travel experiences tailored to their interests and behaviors. Airline stocks have seen an 81% rise since early August, reflecting strong demand and improved financial performance. Travel booking sites also experienced significant gains, indicating robust consumer interest in travel planning.

With this in mind, we have created a Digital Destination Marketing Portal called the www.FlyingCarpet.Travel to showcase a whole new world of exotic and unexplored destinations flown by many of the 70+ airlines that we represent in different countries across the world.

Our industry is never without challenges, and now we face concerns like overtourism as a threat to preserving cultural heritage, currency fluctuations making destinations too expensive for foreign tourists, supplier chain disruptions like slowdown in aircraft production and of course, rising airfares due to inflation, high jet fuel costs etc.

As the representative of over 70 plus airlines globally, we offer each airline a global distribution strategy to generate revenue from both online primary markets, and offline secondary and tertiary markets. We work like an extension of our client airlines, operating as the face of the airline, providing seamless service encompassing both strategic and tactical activities, to create demand and/or shift market share.

We work with small and medium sized airlines to provide affordable access to large markets, similarly we offer bigger airlines marginal revenue from small markets, and we also offer sales augmentation for all airlines in larger markets, where it is too expensive to have staff in multiple stations.

Our people are what make us special, we ensure targeted customer engagement, and optimized revenue from each market for our clients in the travel and tourism Industries.

Our mission has been to embrace digital transformation and all the latest trends like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI+ML) for forecasting and optimizing pricing strategies, Virtual Reality (VR) for immersive training and virtual tours to enhance customer engagement, chatbots to streamline customer experience, cloud-based platforms like Microsoft Teams to facilitate collaboration across territories. It is not rocket science for GSAs like AirlinePros to leverage technology to play a pivotal role in driving growth and competitive advantage for our clients globally.

In 2024, we have organized 3 sessions of the AirlinePros Regional Assemblies (ARA) in TC1, TC2 and TC3, with the primary objective to learn from each other as smaller groups, foster cohesion, and enable effective collaboration within the network as a whole.

In 2025, it is our intention to diversify into a number of new products to better utilize our internal strengths and expertise for the benefit of both our existing clients and new ones.
