2025 will be a record year for passenger numbers - IATA

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has shared encouraging predictions for the airline industry in 2025, foreseeing five billion passengers flying this year – a significant milestone. With anticipated net profits for airlines rising to approximately US$36.6 billion, up from US$31.5 billion in 2024, and total industry revenues projected to reach the trillion-dollar mark, there is plenty of opportunity for airlines and travel agents to capitalize on this growth.
IATA Director General, Willie Walsh, said profits would be hard-won due to challenges in cost management and the need to maintain load factors above 83%. But, the surge in demand for travel opens doors for agents to facilitate exciting journeys.
Agents can encourage clients to explore further year and look for elevated travel experiences. IATA estimates there will be around 40 million flights overall this year and says average airfares will become more affordable due to a 3.4% decrease in passenger yields.
Regarding the Middle East, IATA projects an 8.8% increase in passenger numbers for 2025, with the region’s airlines earning the highest profit per passenger, at $23.90. These projections underscore the robust recovery and anticipated growth in the global and Middle Eastern aviation sectors for 2025.
