FEATURED DESTINATIONS
Widerøe’s comprehensive short-haul network makes it easy to explore many of Norway’s locations and take in towering mountains, iconic fjords, and charming coastal areas. Popular activities include cruise tours, trips to see the Northern Lights, skiing, dog sledding, and midnight sun tours during summer.
Bergen
Known as the Gateway to the Fjords, Bergen is one of Norway’s top tourist cities. It is famous for its colorful wooden houses in the historic Bryggen wharf area, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is also called the City with Seven Mountains.
There is a vibrant cultural scene in Bergen, the local ‘Bergensers’ are friendly, and the scenery is simply stunning.
Bergen is considered the ideal starting point for any adventures in western Norway. From May to September, the weather is generally milder with longer days. Most visits are recorded in June and July, when there are fun festivals and outdoor activities to enjoy.
Lofoten Islands
Lofoten is a breathtaking archipelago with huge mountain peaks, sheltered bays, colourful villages, and fascinating historical roots that date back 1,000 years to the age of the Vikings.
Today, cycling routes cover many islands and visitors can hike or kayak along the shorelines. There are also unique opportunities for Northern Lights tours and midnight sun trips in the summer, while the Lofotr Viking Museum is a must-see and the top tourist attraction in the area.
It is said that the best time to visit is during the summer, from June to August. The weather is milder, and 24 hours of sunshine means more time for outdoor activities. However, the area is also popular during the winter, and ski season and other winter sports generally take place between November and March.
Tromsø
Referred to as the Gateway to the Arctic, Tromsø is a popular destination for adventure-seekers, skiing, and activities like whale watching and dog sledding. There’s also a vibrant cultural scene and plenty of special interest photographic tours.
Because of its location – about 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle – Tromsø is one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights during winter. From mid-May to mid-July, visitors can experience the warm glow of the midnight sun.
The city center is Tromsøya, which Widerøe’s destination guide describes as a green oasis in the middle of the fjord. Several other islands surround Tromsø, and visitors can plan to island-hop between them. They can also stop by Tromsø’s botanical gardens or visit the Arctic Cathedral, a landmark modern church building that visitors can spot from the air when they land in Tromsø. For unforgettable views of Tromsø’s night skies, book accommodation in a traditional Sami tent or glass igloo.
